We raise one breed, and only one breed. Premier Bulldog is a family program in Shipshewana, Indiana, and every litter we have raised since 2011 has been English Bulldogs. Keeping to a single breed is deliberate — it means we know this breed’s health, its temperament and its quirks properly, rather than a little about several.
What an English Bulldog is actually like to live with
Bulldogs are calm, affectionate and famously patient with children. Most adults weigh 40 to 50 pounds and stand 14 to 15 inches tall, with a typical lifespan of 8 to 10 years. Their energy level is low to moderate: 20 to 40 minutes of gentle activity a day suits them, split into short sessions. They are people-oriented dogs who would rather be in the room with you than out running, which is what makes them work so well in apartments and in busy family homes.
They are intelligent but independent-minded, so training rewards patience and short, upbeat sessions more than repetition. Grooming is simple — a weekly brush of the short coat — but the facial wrinkles need wiping a few times a week, and as a flat-faced breed they feel heat badly and need to be kept cool in summer. None of this is hard, but it is worth knowing before you commit to eight to ten years.
